NORCE Norwegian Research Centre

“NORCE – Norwegian Research Centre – joins Renewable Carbon Initiative to be part of the solution. To be part of a community that realises that the massive demand for carbon as an essential building block must be sourced from non-fossil sources. We are inspired by the insight and initiatives taken by RCI and its members – and look forward taking part in creative and constructive processes for development and realisation of the best solutions.”

NORCE – as a research institution – believe in building networks and generate synergy through sharing knowledge throughout the scientific and industrial communities. We are driven by passion for knowledge and striving together towards sustainability. NORCE seeks to develop new knowledge that progresses sustainable development. More specifically, we are involved in renewable carbon projects through development of biotech-based production of feed, fuel and chemical building blocks – “for the common good”. Additionally, NORCE works on developing low emission energy solutions, e.g. innovative and cost-efficient hydrogen technology, and has extensive experience from solar cell research and offshore wind. NORCE also contributes internationally to the development of geothermal solutions and future zero-emission energy solutions for buildings, industries, neighbourhoods and regions.

Company profile

NORCE is a new and forward-looking research institute, with expertise in a wide range of fields and strong communities of knowledge. We deliver research and innovation in energy, health care, climate, the environment, society and technology. Our solutions address key challenges for society and contribute to value creation on the local, national and global levels.
NORCE is one of Norway’s largest independent research institutes with over 2000 projects and 750 employees from all over the world. Our goal is to assist in solving major challenges for society, such as climate change, energy transition, the aging population, social inequality and youth exclusion. To facilitate the creation of clear strategies for specific challenges, we have organised our expertise into four interdisciplinary areas of priority:

• Safe communities
• Sustainable Energy Production
• Climate challenges
• Sustainable Oceans and Coasts

NORCE’s main office is in Bergen, and the institute is present along the entire Norwegian coast from Alta and Tromsø in the north, Bergen, Haugesund and Stavanger in the west, Kristiansand and Grimstad in the south and Oslo in the east.

The largest owners in NORCE are the four universities in Bergen, Stavanger, Agder and Tromsø, either as shareholders or through regional holding companies. Other shareholders are Norwegian Counties, research foundations, as well as companies in industry and finance.

NORCE builds its own facilities and has access to a variety of infrastructure, including various labs and test facilities, as well as a research aircraft. This infrastructure is important for developing new knowledge that meets society’s needs, and contributes to a sustainable energy transition.
