Fraunhofer IAP
Company Profile
The Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Polymer Research IAP specializes in the development of (bio)polymers and nanomaterials, plastics processing, functional integration, lightweight technologies, and the chemical recycling of plastics. With around 270 employees the institute works along the entire value chain – from initial idea to industrial-scale implementation. Its research focuses on key societal challenges, including bioeconomy and sustainability, energy transition and mobility, health and quality of life, as well as industrial and technological innovation. Applications span a wide range of sectors, including packaging, automotive and aerospace industries, energy systems, construction, electronics, textiles, and medical technology.
A central element of the institute’s work is the transition towards a climate-neutral materials economy. Fraunhofer IAP develops plastics and functional materials based on biomass, CO₂ and recyclates, while also addressing process development, scale-up and system-level assessment. The aim is not only to generate scientific knowledge, but to ensure that sustainable material solutions are transferred into industrial practice.
The decision to join the Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI) is closely linked to this strategic orientation. The goals of the RCI align strongly with the institute’s long-standing activities in advancing renewable carbon as a replacement for fossil resources. Membership provides access to current industrial challenges, enabling the institute to better align its research with real-world needs.
At the same time, Fraunhofer IAP seeks to actively contribute its expertise to the RCI network. This includes collaboration in joint development projects along value chains as well as providing robust data and analyses to support policy frameworks. The institute is convinced that the transition towards renewable carbon requires close cooperation between research, industry and policy. Through its membership, Fraunhofer IAP aims to support this collaboration and help accelerate the market uptake of sustainable material solutions.
