Renewable Carbon Initiative Highlights Successful Annual General Meeting and Key Publication Update

The Renewable Carbon Initiative (RCI), a global network comprising more than 60 prominent companies from the chemical and materials sectors, convened for its annual General Meeting in Cologne from September 25th to 26th. This two-day event brought together over 50 representatives from various member companies for a fruitful exchange of ideas and the presentation of vital updates to the RCI's mission.

Annual General Meeting – A big Success

The General Meeting, held at Cologne for one and a half days, saw remarkable participation and collaboration among RCI members. The event included a social dinner on the first evening and a short-guided walk along the beautiful panorama of the Rhine River in Cologne. During the meeting, attendees looked back at and positively reflected upon the accomplishments of the past year, discussed longer-term strategy for RCI’s path forward for 2024 and beyond, and voted for potential new activities that the RCI should address in the coming year.

On the second day of the General Meeting, the participants engaged in insightful presentations from eight different member companies and fostered valuable networking opportunities among the participants. The general mood was overwhelmingly positive and the RCI is optimistic as it is heading into what will be a very important year 2024.

Key publication “Renewable Carbon as a Guiding Principle for Sustainable Carbon Cycles” updated

In combination with the successful General Meeting, the RCI proudly announces the release of an updated version of its key publication “Renewable Carbon as a Guiding Principle for Sustainable Carbon Cycles.” This publication, first launched in February 2022, has undergone a larger revision to ensure its continued relevance amidst the ever-evolving landscape of sustainable carbon initiatives.

Notable updates in the publication include the incorporation of new climate change data from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and revised policy recommendations derived from the RCI's extensive advocacy efforts over the past 18 months. This publication serves as a comprehensive resource that clarifies the concept of renewable carbon and emphasizes its essential role as a guiding principle for policy. It highlights how the vital transition from fossil carbon to renewable carbon in the chemical and derived materials industry can be facilitated, leading towards a defossilised future that enables to achieve net-zero targets and circularity of carbon.

“As the world continues to grapple with the pressing challenges of climate change, our annual General Meeting and the updated publication of our core report underscore the RCI's commitment to advancing sustainable carbon cycles and fostering collaboration within the industry“ said Michael Carus, one of the two Executive Managers of the Renewable Carbon Initiative. “We believe that by promoting the use of renewable carbon as a guiding principle, we can drive substantial change and support the defossilisation of our sector.”

The updated publication, "Renewable Carbon as a Guiding Principle for Sustainable Carbon Cycles," serves as a valuable resource for industry professionals, policymakers, and all stakeholders committed to the defossilisation of our economy.
